He initially thought the particles were diamonds, but soon concluded that the crystals were composed of silicon carbide. Present-day, moissanite is lab-made. After decades of technological advancement, the particles Moissan discovered have been refined to produce what is now one of the most enduringly luminous gemstones on the planet.
