As the wonderful Grace Kelly said in the past, this saying is still relevant today. The pearl is the one and only, a wonderful stone, different and unique, with magical colors, sizes and endless shapes and a pleasant touch on the body. No wonder this month we are celebrating with pearl jewelry?
Greeks believed pearls were the tears of the gods and ancient Chinese believed black pearls were a symbol of wisdom and were formed inside a dragon’s head.
Though classified as a gemstone, pearls are extremely unique, largely due to the fact that they are the only gem material formed and found within a living creature. Unlike diamonds, rubies, emeralds and more, pearls require no cutting or polishing before use and are simply stunning the way they naturally form.
Present day natural pearling is confined mostly to seas off Bahrain. Australia also has one of the world’s last remaining fleets of pearl diving ships. Australian pearl divers dive for south sea pearl oysters to be used in the cultured south sea pearl industry.
Most pearls today are “cultured,” or farmed, by implanting an irritant into pearl oysters or freshwater pearl mussels. The mollusk with then deposit layers of nacre around the irritant. Nacre, also known as mother of pearl, is the same material that lines the mollusk’s inner shell for protection, and is responsible for the pearl’s luster. Most of today’s cultured pearls come from China, with natural pearls found in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. Pearls symbolize integrity, love, and – you guessed it – purity. Pearls are classic and timeless, but also today’s unique shapes and color allow them to be contemporary enough to be worn everyday.
